" Mr Oastler's imprisonment no doubt deepened his ex- perience of life, and increased his influence on national politics. The mind is influenced by associations, and, like the dyer's hand, it is coloured by that with which it comes in contact. It was the saying of a baronet — a scholar and an M. P. — tha...t " the most instructive society in London was to be met in Mr Oastler's room in the Fleet. " It must in some respects have been advantageous to the gentleman who was the centre of attraction. Many as were the services rendered to the factory movement by the imprisoned editor of the Fleet Papers, they were much more than balanced by the loss sustained in the absence of his fiery and inspiring oratory over the masses in the north. Mr Oastler's im- prisonment very materially retarded the progress and delayed the final triumph of the short-time movement, with which his name and fame are indissolubly connected.
