The year 1881 marked the beginning of a new epoch in the history of Ohio Jewry. It was in that year that the new waves of immigration rolled in from Eastern Europe. Suffering under the severe laws of the czars, Jews from Russia, Poland, and Lithuania began to enter the United States in ever increasing numbers. The existing institutions were not large enough to cope with this new group of immigrants.
