The table-stone is called _ka Iawbei tynrai_, or _ka Iawbei tymmen_, literally the grandmother of the root, orthe old grandmother, in contradistinction to _ka_ _Iawbei khynraw_, or _ka Iawbei kpoh_ (the grandmother of the family, or branch of thefamily). It frequently happens that there are two flat table-stonesin front of the upright stones, the one on the left being _ka Iawbeitynrai_, or the first ancestress, and the one on the right _ka Iawb...eilongkpoh_, the grandmother of the branch of the clan to, which thememorialists belong, or _ka Iawbei khynraw_, the young grandmother, i. E. The grandmother of the actual family to which the memorialistsbelong. In olden days it used to be the custom for the clanspeopleto place offerings of food on the flat table-stones for the shadesof the departed ancestors, and this is sometimes the case still;but now it is more frequently the custom to make these offerings inthe _iing-seng_, or clan puja-house.
