He made an invasion to Oldtown, and attacked a body of British, killing nineteen of them, but lost his own life. Another affair was an incursion into Canada, by Colonel Campbell, who destroyed a number of private dwellings, together with some mills and distilleries. For this act he was court-martialed and censured. But the most gallant affair that signalized the opening of the campaign was the defense made by Captain Holmes against a greatly superior force of British and Indians. On the 21st of... February, 1814, he was dispatched by Captain Butler, who was in WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON. 239 commnnd at Detroit, at the head of one liundred and sixty rangers, against a body of the enemy who had assembled at a village about fifteen miles from Detroit. Not knowing the strength of the enemy, lie took up a strong position, which he felt confident of being able to defend until he should ascertain. He was soon after attacked on all sides by the British and Indians. But he and his men defended themselves with a cour- age, judgment and resolution, scarcely, if any, inferior to that of Fort Stephenson by Major Croghan.
