3. The Postulate of Excluded Middle, Eveiy- thing whatever is either A or else not- A.
These three Postulates are statements of the nature and operation of the act of selective attention for the purpose of knowing, each severally stating one of the three aspects of it, which together exhaust its full significance. The first says of the object or content selectively attended to, that it is taken as it was as that moment, that is, unchanged by its being part of the flux of experience ; or that th...e A spoken of is itsel/j being its own predicate. The second says of that object, that it is exclusive of everything not included in it at that moment, that it is A and A only, so that, however often it recurs in thought, it is taken to contain exactly what it contained at the moment of first attending to it, and is not subsumed under, but commensiu^te and convertible with, its predicate, the second A of the first Postulate ; what- ever is not so commensurate and convertible being called Not- A.
