Meng-Khaung, the 23 * 356 THE PRESIDENTIAL ARMIES OF INDIA. Burmese King, then unremittingly gave himself up to good works in the city of Ava and the surrounding country. It may now be briefly remarked that the Burmans were, in a manner, subject to Pegu until about the middle of the 16th century. A revolution having taken place, the Burmese acquired and retained the superiority until A. D. 1740, when, the brave Peguers having revolted, a fierce civil war ensued, which was carried on with savage... ferocity until A. D. 1752, when the Peguers captured the city of Ava, and completed the conquest of the whole Burmese kingdom, thus becoming masters of Ava's jewels as well as of the gold and jewels of Pegu. The King of Pegu, after many victories, returned to his own capital, and the Burmans again took up arms under the command of the far-famed Alornpra the " hunter-captain " a man of low origin, but of a brave and enter- prising character, who not only expelled the Peguera from Ava, but invaded and conquered Pegu itself, which remained subject to Burma until, from the Second Burmese War, it came under British rule.
