"When heaven is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against thee; if they pray towards this place, and confess Thy Name, and turn from their sin, when Thou afflictest them. Then hear Thou in heaven, and forgive the sins of Thy servants, and of Thy people Israel that Thou teach them the good way wherein they should walk, and give rain upon Thy land, which Thou hast given to Thy people for an inheritance. " (i Kings viii:33~36. ) Jeremiah says that on account... of the sin of the people "the showers were withholden and there hath been no latter rain. " (Jerem. Iii 15. ) In Hosea vi 13 the latter and former rain is mentioned in connection with the restoration of the people and the return of the Lord. In the New Testament the early and latter rain is mentioned only once and that in the Epistle which is addressed not to the church, but to the twelve tribes, which are scattered abroad. This must always be remembered in reading the Epistle of James. But there it is used only as an illustration and has no further spiritual application.
