But I found that Mr. Gillett, the planter referred to above, had dug his sweet potatoes a few days previous on account of the ravages of this insect. I was informed that the injury caused by this beetle was very great. In some fields nearly the whole crop was said to be destroyed." Although the Plant Commissioner and his assistants were aware of the published account, quoted in part above, regarding the weevil having been found in Manatee County as early as 1878, it was impossible, on account of all energies being di- rected to the immediate subjugation of citrus canker, to make any investigations regarding the sweet potato root weevil until the summer and fall of 1916.
