Gaulden regarded it as a mere abstraction. " You have cut off the supply of slaves," he says. " You have crippled the institution of slavery in the States by your unjust laws. We have no slaves to carry into these territories. We can never make another slave State with our present supply of slaves.
But if we could, it would not be wise, as it would only Avith- draw slaves from Maryland, Delaware, or Virginia, and to that extent make theirs free soil.
