29 THE CHICAGO TRIBUNE BUILDING.
^The first CHICAGO TRIBUNE building on the present site, erected thoroughly fire-proof, as was believed, justified expectation by staying for hours the progress of the Great Fire. Dispatches throughout the world on that fateful Monday, October gth, 1871, announced again and again " THE TRIBUNE building still stands ! " At length a wide sweep of the flames to the rear, the destruction of the stately Palmer House and the burning of McVicker's Theatre, brought the so long averted disaster ; and from the crushing in of an area wall by the fall of the Theatre, the TRIBUNE building succumbed, like a mailed warrior taken in the rear by treach- erous foes.
