His chief reliance, under Providence and his ownstrong heart, had been upon French assistance. Although Genlis, by hismisconduct, had sacrificed his army and himself, yet the Prince as stilljustly sanguine as to the policy of the French court. " In that letter the King had declared hisdetermination to employ all the forces which God had placed in his handsto rescue the Netherlands from the oppression under which they weregroaning. In accordance with the whole spirit and language of the Frenchgovernment, was the tone of Coligny in his correspondence with Orange. The Admiral assured the Prince that there was no doubt as to theearnestness of the royal intentions in behalf of the Netherlands, andrecommending extreme caution, announced his hope within a few days toeffect a junction with him at the head of twelve thousand Frencharquebusiers, and at least three thousand cavalry.
