I found my grandmother’s transit visa from Russia in one of the many dusty boxes in my parents’ condo. The yellowing paper was inscribed with sepia ink and stamped by the Polish Komisar: “Legation De Belgique En Pologne,” it reads. Born in “Imperium Rosyjskiego,” the Russian empire.
