...nd had been present at the siege of Quebec but unfortunate- ly, in a skirmish with the enemy, he was so severely wounded in the leg, that the surgeon belonging to his regiment found LIEUTENANT HARTLEY. 35 amputation necessary. When he could bear the voyage, he returned to England, being wholly unfit for farther service.
In London he had left a wife and child ; and the half pay allowed to disabled offi- cers was the only means of providing for them that he now possessed. Therefore, immediately on his arrival, he retired into the country with his wife and little son.
