Tilletia Anthoxanthi Blytt. Figs. 12, 39. The sori arc ovate, about 3 mm. In length, and usually occur in all of the ovaries of the spike ; they are somewhat hidden by the envel- oping glumes, and at first are covered by a thin plant mem- brane, which eventually ruptures, disclosing the dusty, reddish black spore mass. Hyaline cells, or immature spores, are mixed with the spores, and are smaller than those, and have thin to medium-thick walls. The mature spores are reddish brown, ovo...id to spherical, reticulate (3-6^ wide and 1-3/z deep), and 24-30/*, occasionally even 34/i, in length.
Host and Distr. : Anthoxanthum odoratum, Whitney- ville, July 6, 1902.
The sori are so inconspicuous in the ovaries that the in- fected spikes scarcely differ in appearance from the normal. See Fig. 39, in which the spike is magnified two diameters. This European species has been found in this country only at the above station.
