Thus an average of at least $100, 000, 000 is by this bank- ing system constantly filtered into the banks of New York, and through them into the hands of the gamblers of Wall Street,... to be used at merely nominal rates of interest, in "cornering" the markets, raising and depressing prices, and making wreck and ruin of honest enterprise.
Note. — In 1887 the banks of the cities of Chicag-o and St. Louis were added to those of New York as depositories for the reserves of the banks of the reserve cities, but are used as such to a very limited extent only, as appears from the reports of the Comptroller.
