What reading level is The Writings of Abraham Lincoln — volume 2: 1843-1858 book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

The controversy was settled by also letting Missouriin as a slave State; but with the agreement that within all the remainingpart of the purchase, north of a certain line, there should never beslavery. As to what was to be done with the remaining part, south of theline, nothing was said; but perhaps the fair implication was, it shouldcome in with slavery if it should so choose. The southern part, except aportion heretofore mentioned, afterward did come in with slavery, as theState of Arkansas. ...All these many years, since 1820, the northern parthad remained a wilderness. At length settlements began in it also. In duecourse Iowa came in as a free State, and Minnesota was given a territorialgovernment, without removing the slavery restriction. Finally, thesole remaining part north of the line--Kansas and Nebraska--was to beorganized; and it is proposed, and carried, to blot out the old dividingline of thirty-four years' standing, and to open the whole of that countryto the introduction of slavery.
