During the month of January 1864, our reg- iment broke camp and marched towards Sev ierville, Tennessee, crossing the beautiful 53 Frenchbroad river at Newport. About six miles from Sevierville, we were drawn up in line of battle, near MacNutt's mill, and here had a spirited engagement with the enemy. In this; battle I was severely wounded, a misfor- tune which caused my capture and subsequent imprisonment, thus ending any further active service in the field on my part. I had been engaged in th...irteen hard contested battles, had endured the privations incident to the seige of Vicksburg; was with the besieging force at Cumberland Gap and now, when least ex- pecting it, received in comparatively an in- significant engagement a wound which came near ending my life. The fates had decreed that I was yet to endure greater suffering, more privations, and to fill to its overflowing my solider's cup of bitter experiences in the wretched surroundings of a Yankee prison pen at Camp Chase, Ohio.
