In this they did not succeed, as we had a shorter distance in a direct line to the bridge than they had, and our artillery, which was posted on the south side of the brook, between the bridge and the Delaware, played into the front and flank of their column, which induced them to fall back. The bridge was narrow and our platoons in passing it were crowded into a dense and solid mass in the rear, of which the enemy were making their best efforts.
