He made his nephew, Bushrod Washington, hisprincipal heir, leaving Mount Vernon to him. He said that he did thispartly because he had promised the young man's father, his brother, JohnAugustine, when they were bachelors, to leave Mount Vernon to him incase he should fall in the French war.
