...On account of weakness of the eyes he was obliged to abandon his cherished purpose of a College Education. He commenced business in Northampton as Druggist, Chemist, and Manu- facturer. In 1846 with his brother Samuel and others he engaged in the manufacture of cotton goods in Florence. He was connected with various other Corporations, Manu- facturing, Banking and Educational as Director and Trustee and was an able financier. He was a reformer and philan- thropist whose humane and Christian charities beginning at home have compassed the globe.
