" Brethren, I have no such report to make. I re- member only one scene. I have knowledge of only one subject. Such a week I never knew before — New England never knew — our country never knew. Sad 8 and heart-sick, I have come back, not to tell you what I have witnessed — the papers have attempted to describe the scene, but it cannot be described — the downcast look, the heavy heart, the pale face, the sad tone, the ominous shake of the head, the thoughts and feelings that would not let men sleep — oh, it was a dark week !
