" 295 296 Biographical Sketches and Notes It is probable that the judicial misconduct which caused his down- fall was no worse than that of other men in the corrupt times of James First; but it is impossible to deny that his motives through- out his career were alloyed with a certain mean selfishness that led him sometimes into sycophancy, sometimes into ingratitude if not treachery, and later resulted in those acts that drove him out of public life.
