The lime used in building was taken from the marble pit now owned bv Joseph Hurd, situated at the southwest part of the town. There are two pits open at the present time. The western pit is said to have been open from time immemorial. The former practice of removing the marble to make lime, was t...hat of making a fire in the pit, thereby rendering it more susceptible of impression from the tools made use of for remo- vmg it. Marble of an excellent quality might still be obtain- ed there were it not that the expense of getting it out would outweigh its value when ready for use. This pit lies north from what is now called Bear Hill. This was formely called Bears Hill, from the fact of its having been a noted place for the residence of those animals. Gov. Winthrop states in his history of Massachusetts, that he was travelling this way on a certain occasion, and stopped upon Bears Hill, to rest and refresh himself with food.
