Fry had first in view was to obtain information about all the various issues which had been printed to the date of the Autho- rized Version of 1611. The interest extending, he did not stop at that year but continued to add copies from various presses, even up to the New Version of 1881-5. He devoted much attention to the editions of the translations by William Tyndale, Miles Coverdale, and Archbishop Cranmer; and with this object he was in constant correspondence 34 with a large number of perso...ns who possessed copies of any of them, sparing no trouble in personally visiting public or private Libraries where treasured volumes could be inspected or compared. He always received the greatest kind- ness from the fortunate possessors of rare copies, and the Quaker gentleman in the old costume, now almost obsolete, had the fullest access granted him to the Koyal Library at Windsor, to that at Lambeth Palace, to the magnificent collection of Earl Spencer at Althorpe, to that of the late Earl of Ashburnham at Ashburnham Place, the Earl of Leicester's at Holkham Hall, the Marquis of Northampton's at Castle Ashby, the Earl of Pem- broke's at Wilton, Lord Zouche's at Parham, and many others.
