" On the repulse of the British at New Orleans, it is well known, that, though peace had then been made, this was not only unknown to General Jackson, but that officer was under the impression, that increased vigilance, and more extensive preparations had become necessary, to maintain the country which he had so successfully defended. Full of anxiety on this subject, he determined to send a confidential officer to Washington, to arrange with the government the measures to be adopted for this purpose.
