He did not deem it advisa- ble, however, to weaken his position at Detroit, while a formidable enemy remained, in its neighborhood ; and he determined to attack and reduce Fort Meigs, destroy the stores there collected, and thus avert the danger with which he was himself threatened, and then he could with safety comply with the order which summoned him to the relief of the Lower Province.
