In this -work the antiquities of Ireland are discussed in a learned and rational manner. The pretensions of the Irish to a remote antiquity are shown to be entirely destitute of foundation. It is doubtful, indeed, -whether there was anything that could be called domestic architecture, or even a stone house, in the island previously to the loth centur}-. And if it be true that the Irish had -what -was really a literature in the 7th and 8th c...enturies, it must have existed -without the accompaniment of the most ordinarj' and indispensable branches of usefid kno-wledge, or of the arts. The invasion of the English in the 12th century is the true a;ra of the introduction of the latter.
