JOSEPH E. SHEFFIELD Joseph Earl Sheffield was born in Southport, then a part ofFairfield, Conn. , on June 19, 1793. Beginning his busi- ness career as a clerk in Newbern, North Carolina, at the age of fourteen, before he was twenty-one he was admitted to partnership in the house in which he was employed. In 1816 he settled in Mobile, Alabama, and after a lucrative career there he removed to New Haven in 1835, on account of his wife's health and to secure an education for his chil- dren in a non-slaveholding community.
