Other accoimts say that the ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY YEARS 147 vessels were not allowed to land their cargoes and were sent away. On May 14, 1774, a meeting of merchants assembled in the Long Room to consider the question of uniting with the other colonies in a call for a Congress of the colonies. The atten- dance proving to be too large for the room, an adjournment was made to the Merchants' Coffee House, where a Com- mittee of Correspondence was appointed and who, on May 23, issued the famous le...tter in which the idea of a union of the Colonies was first expressed. In August, 1774, the Massachusetts delegates to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia were entertained by the New York delegates at a banquet in the Long Room. The remarks of John Adams on the banquet and other subjects connected with the visit are set forth in a preceding chapter of this work. The Third Provincial Congress held its sessions in the Long Room from May 18 to June 30, 1776, a fact which is not generally known, but is attested by the records and also by a bill for entertainment paid to Francis.
