After lurking in the system it appears at length in the skin, goes through its inevitable process, causes fingers and toes and other limbs to fall off, while the mutilated part heals without any application, and, if congenital, terminates life in about fifty years. If acquired by infection it usually causes death in about twenty years. The sufferer may not endure much pain ; but he is a wretched and loathsome object.
