Dark stories I had heard of doings on the river Seine, now recurred to my mind ; but I was quickly recalled to the necessity of prompt action, by hearing the church bells strike half-past eleven, and remembering that the tall man had appointed midnight as the time for what I now imagined meant their meeting on this very spot. Running back to where I had left my insensible charge, I lifted her in my arms and carried her to the door of the first house beyond the red one.
