Mr. Hale put himself on record, by speech, resolution, and ballot, as opposed to the mensure. He was not long in discovering that 11 his position was not approved at home ; and, further on, he came to see that his continued opposition to the annexation scheme would prove his political death- warrant. He was at this time the nominee of his party for reelection ; but he knew that his votes and action on this measure would result in his being finally repudiated by his political friends. Rather, he went forward and fore- stalled *his doom by wu^iting a letter addressed to his constituents, in which he declared thnt the reasons given by the advocates of the annexation scheme "were eminently worthj^ to provoke the scorn of earth and the judgment of Heaven." In the conven- tion of his party, which immediately followed, Mr.
Hale's name was struck from the ticket by an unani- mous vote. Mr. Hale then be^-an to make those appeals to the people, in which the powers of his pe- culiar and versatile eloquence had full play.
