The river ...appeared to be very tranquil, not to say dull and slow, so it could hardly be intended for boating men ; therefore, as we could not solve the riddle, and there was no one about to do so for us, we gave it up.
It afforded us a good deal of interest and amuse- ment from time to time on our journey, to reason the why and wherefore of many puzzling things we saw. For instance, at one place we passed a few miles back we observed the church was built on the top of a bleak hill without even a solitary tree or a shrub near, and far away from all houses; we concluded it must have been erected thus, as a land- mark in years past, when the country around was a forest wilderness.
