For how can a man of Ger- man blood fail to be inspired and lifted above 49 himself by the wonderful sight which the whole German people, from the Kaiser to the last man in the trenches, is presenting in its unparalleled heroic struggle against a world of enemies. But I hope this stronger assertion of German indi- viduality will consist in a larger Americanism.
Germans have often reproached their fellow citizens of other stock for considering them a kind of second class Americans.
