Towards the end of this period the crystals become always larger. On the part of the barrel opposite the pan, and in the pan itself, numerous spots of the red oxide of iron are visible. Testing with Tincture of Galls, and with Ferrocyanide of Potassium shows the presence of a salt of iron. Fourth period : — This lasts till the fifteenth day, and differs only from the third in that the quantity of the salt of iron on the barrel gradually diminishes (!), while the red oxide increases. Orfila does... not hesitate to say respecting these experiments, " it is thus possible to determine, within a few days, or even within a few hours, how long it has been since any firearm has been discharged." I, for my part, am far from sharing this opinion. For we dare not attribute such importance and probative power, especially in such a case as this, where the life of the accused may depend upon it, to the isolated and unconfirmed experiments of a man unknown to science. Moreover, the extreme distinctness with which Boutigny lays down the results of his experiments, makes them look all the more suspicious.
