" Often the breadth of his reading in preparation for a paper leads him to give oddly incongruous lists, as: "Bascom and Ruskin follow Mill"; "Browning, Banville, Whitman, Emerson. " Notwith- standing these peculiarities his critical writings are solid, and not to be ignored by any student of the subjects which he treats.
