He had been a pastor in the Evangeli- cal Lutheran Church from 1843 until he ca...me to Auburn. When he retired from his chair at Auburn in 1851, he be- Struggle and Conflict 115 came pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church of Newark, N. J. On August 26, 1851, Dr. Fewsmith presented his resignation to take effect on June 1st. It was not until January 7, 1852, that his successor, the Rev. W. G. T. Shedd, D. D. , of the University of Vermont, was elected. Dr. Shedd was inaugurated, June 15, 1852, the Rev. Dr. Lathrop giving the charge to the new professor. On November 29, 1853, at a special meeting of the Board, Professor Shedd pre- sented his resignation to take effect the following February, and a committee was appointed to consider his successor.
