But the high-minded Caesar, who was himself a scholar, and wished to promote scholar- ship, received Varro most graciously, and gave him the agreeable task of founding a great public library in Rome/ This was the more pleasing, since Varro's own splendid private library had been destroyed in the Civil Wars, just as his beautiful villa at Casinum had been plundered and defiled by Antony, — a scene which Cicero has depicted with almost hideous realism in his second Philippic oration.
