Eve is comforted by the thought that she should be worthy to be the mother of the Saviour ; she suc- ceeds in comforting Adam, and hand in hand they slowly quit Paradise.
This grand poem had not exhausted Milton's pleasure in composing, but it had exhausted his poetical power. He undertook to write a sequel to " Paradise Lost," " Paradise Regained,^' which was published in 1671, in four books, and in the same metre.
