A return to Leipzig to complete his schooling brought him in touch with the Gewandhaus concerts and with Beethoven. When at Leipzig University he found an excellent and sympathetic master in Weinlig, then Cantor of the Thomas School, who taught him counterpoint, undoubtedly upon the old Italian lines, an experience which gave him his knowledge of Pales- trina and which fructified in Parsifal. He flew high and tried his hand at larger orchestral works, several overtures, and even a symphony, whi...ch he submitted to Mendelssohn, who took no notice of it and lost the score. 'In later years the parts were found and the music performed, but although showing flashes of the Beethovenian spirit, it is immature and not very interesting. In 1832 he turned to opera, writing his own libretto, a tragedy called Die Hochzeit. He was made chorus master at Wiirzburg, and wrote another.
Die Feen. Neither opera reached the stage. In 1834 he first saw Wilhelmina Schroder-Devrient, the great soprano singer, at Leipzig, who for many years had a great influence upon him, both musically and politically.
