" Yet the reason cannot help forming these " ideas " (when our mind goes beyond under- standing what we perceive w r ith the senses, and speculates on the nature of reality as a whole, Kant calls it " reason " instead of "understanding"); and if it did not, our understanding would lack the perpetual spur to activity provided by a goal towards which it can ever advance, but can never reach.
