Orren Stoddard attended the first school erected in his home town of Linden, and lived to see four educational institutions erected near the same site — first, a log school house ; secondly, a one-story frame building ; thirdly, a two-story frame structure ; and fourthly, a substantial modern brick edifice. After exhausting the educational facilities provided by the Linden schools, he attended college for a time at Merom, and in August, 1862, enlisted in the Seventy-second Regiment Indiana Volunteer In- fantry for service in the Civil war.
