Jackson in the appointment of Governor, but he agreed with the other local merchants in thinking it would be better to have at the head of the government an officer who was altogether unconnected with trade ; and they asked that Mr. George Maclean, an officer of the Royal African Colonial CoVps, who had accompanied Colonel Lumley to the Gold Coast in 1826 in the capacity of military secretary, and whose abilities had then recommended him to the notice of the merchants, might be appointed. Mr. M...aclean, being willing to accept the appointment, proceeded to the Gold Coast in 1830. Just before his arrival the allied tribes had made an attack upon Elmina, in which they had been assisted by a body of Cape Coast militia in the pay of the Government, who had joined their countrymen in open defiance of orders. The attempt, ill-concerted and badly carried out, had proved, however, perfectly abortive ; for the allies, after making a feeble attack, had been repulsed on all sides, and the retreat was changed to a rout by the guns of Fort Conraadsburgh.
