He was a descendant of the illustrious and beloved Asmonean family, and dis- tinguished by his extraordinary abilities, which had been cultivated by a superior education. His mind had been expanded by travelling in foreign lands, and he had spent some time in Rome. In his autobio- graphy, Josephus gives the following account of his journey to Rome, and his sojourn there : " I had not long completed my twenty-sixth year when a circumstance happened, which induced me to make a voyage to Italy. At... the time when Felix was procurator of Judea there were some priests with whom I was well acquainted, honourable and good men, whom, on a mere frivolous casual pretext, he had sent in irons to Rome to render account of their conduct to Caesar. I was anxious to find some means of deli- verance for these priests, and the more so as I heard that even under this depressing affliction they were not neglectful of religious observances, and abstained from all food except figs and nuts. I reached Rome after a very perilous voyage, for our ship foundered in the *" History of the Romans under the Empire.
