But what greatly enhanced the favour was the amiable and endearing manner in which his lordship^ communi- cated the intelligence to us. " ^ In the same year the Irish episcopacy ...was in treaty with Lord Castlereagh, the unwavering friend of the Catholics, for a similar provision for the Irish clergy. We know this from the resolutions of the Irish Bishops given below, ^ and from a ^ Lord Advocate of Scotland.

^ " At a meeting of the Roman Catholic prelates, held at Dublin on the 17th, 1 8th, and 19th January, 1799, to deliberate on a proposal from Government of an independent provision for the Roman Catholic clergy of Ireland, under certain regulations not incompatible with their doctrines, discipline, or just influence, it was admitted that a provision through Government for the Roman Catholic clergy of this kingdom, competent and secured, ought to be thankfully accepted.
