Wagner advised the congregation to write a memorial to the consistory of Stutt- gart, Wiirtemberg, the head of the church from which he himself had come. In this memorial the congregation expressed a strong desire that a competent person should be selected and sent to labor in America. Meantime a wandering Wiirtemberg theological student named Engel- and and a Rev. Mr. Wartmann,^^^ who had been pastor of a congregation in Hamburg, Europe, preached at Lancaster for a short time. In May, 1752, the Wiir- temberg Consistory selected the Rev. John Siegfried Ge- rock. He had already been ordained by the Consistory of Darmstadt and reached Lancaster in March, 1753.
