His death occurred April 5th 1784, at the age of seventy-five. In recommending him to the church in Pittis- field, the Rev. Jonathan Mayhew declares, ^^ that his life and conversation were as becomes a professor of the gos- pel." The Rev. Mr. Allen says, *^ he was a gentleman of liberal education and cultivated understanding, of great generosity, a friend of religious order and of the happiness of the town.*' Charles Goodrich^ Esq. came to this town in 1752, a year before Col. Williams, as has ...been stated, and lived for a time likewise in a house used as a fortification in the second French war, constructed of squared logs, and standing a lit- tle south-east of the dwelling-house of Mr. Hosea Merrill, Jr. *, though he spent most of his days in the dwelling near the " Four Corners," recently occupied by his son, the Rev. Charles Goodrich. He was the proprietor of several lots of land in the township ; and in 1761 he obtained a grant of the southern part of Hancock, probably with a view to the ac- commodation of some of his relatives.
