The first suc- cessful temperance society was established in 1826, and in the years that followed the temperance cause won thousands of adherents, and did remarkable work in repressing the mania for strong drink.^ ^ Total abstinence was not required by the early temperance socie- ties. All they demanded was abstinence from distilled spirits, — whis- key, brandy, and rum. In 1840 the Washingtonian Temperance Society was formed, which required total abstinence.
