De Wint had a good connection among the publishers, and he produced many works for book illustration; his drawings lend themselves well for reproduction by means of engraving. He was, we consider, one of the most original and talented of the earlier members of the Society. He drew his inspi- ration directly from nature, and he had a deep appre- ciation of the charms of our native English scener...y, which he handled with rare skill. It has been well said of his art that it was "neither realistic nor ideal. " He had a wonder- ful sense of beauty of line, and he represented a wide land- scape with comparatively little labour, for he applied his washes freely and boldly, seldom resorting to sti2:)pling, and, except in his later works, he eschewed the use of body colour.
