The wheel would be bored for the shaft, and key wayed, and as shewn would be rough machined for the joint faces. This practice drawing is to be made double the size of the Book figure, which would make the drawing 3" scale, and as it is a good exercise in good class drawing, it may with advantage be drawn a full half wheel in both the side elevation and joint plan. The vertical section would be as shewn. This would require half imperial size paper 22" x 15". The centres of the radii of the teet...h are shewn by dotted lines. The teeth are 2" pitch and approximately cycloidal in form, and are drawn from the pitch line by two curves, one for the point (above the pitch line) and one for the root (below the pitch line).
All over the drawing careful work is required and very exact setting and handling of the compasses. The larger circles and tips and bottoms of the teeth are best drawn with a beam compass and short bar, if available. Other- wise the half set will have to be used, and special care must be exercised to avoid springing the legs.
